About Bandit Kings Of Ancient China
Bandit Kings Of Ancient China is a strategy and historical simulation game from Koei, released for the NES in 1990. Based on the classic Chinese epic Water Margin, it places you among rival outlaw leaders in Song-era China, each trying to build enough strength and influence to survive the struggles ahead. Rather than focusing on arcade action, the game asks you to think like a governor, commander, and political leader.
Each turn involves weighing several competing needs. You can develop your territory, manage supplies, recruit and assign capable officers, raise troops, gather information, negotiate with neighboring rulers, or launch an attack. Military strength matters, but careless expansion can leave a kingdom short of food, money, or reliable personnel. Officers have different abilities, making the process of choosing who handles civil administration, intelligence, or battlefield duties an important part of a successful campaign. Events and changing relationships add uncertainty, so a plan that looks sound at the beginning may need to be revised as the situation develops.
The NES version brings Koei’s detailed, menu-driven design to a console, with a measured pace that rewards patience and careful decision-making. It also supports up to five players, allowing friends to compete for dominance through a shared political and military struggle rather than a conventional head-to-head action match. The presentation is deliberately functional, keeping attention on maps, statistics, commands, and the consequences of each decision.
For players who enjoy strategic planning, historical settings, and long campaigns with many possible outcomes, Bandit Kings Of Ancient China offers an unusually deep experience for the NES. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and revisit one of Koei’s more distinctive console strategy games.
