Battletoads Double Dragon

Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team brings Rare’s two beat ’em up series together in a crossover built for the NES. Released in 1993 and published by Tradewest, it lets players take control of the Battletoads—Rash, Zitz, or Pimple—or Double Dragon’s Billy and Jimmy Lee. In two-player mode, two heroes can fight side by side, giving the game a lively cooperative feel that suits its chaotic action.

The objective is straightforward: move through a series of side-scrolling stages, defeat waves of street punks, mutants, and other enemies, and stop the Dark Queen and the Shadow Warriors. Combat combines punches, kicks, throws, jumping attacks, and weapons picked up from the environment. Each character has a slightly different feel, while the Battletoads bring their exaggerated smash attacks to the same brawling framework as the Lee brothers.

The game also reflects the distinctive style of the Battletoads series, with hazards and fast-moving sequences breaking up the regular fights. Players may find themselves dealing with environmental obstacles, sudden changes in pace, and the demanding difficulty associated with classic 8-bit beat ’em ups. Learning enemy patterns and working with a partner is often more useful than simply rushing forward.

Battletoads & Double Dragon is a compact but memorable crossover, especially for players who enjoy arcade-style combat, colorful character designs, and cooperative NES games. It does not soften the challenge, but that toughness is part of its appeal: every cleared stage feels earned. Whether revisiting the game from the 1993 era or discovering it for the first time, RetroCloud gives you a convenient way to play online on your browser and experience this unusual meeting of two familiar franchises.
