About Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest

Released for the NES in 1988, Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest takes Konami’s vampire-hunting series in a more exploratory direction. You play as Simon Belmont, traveling through Transylvania in search of Dracula’s remains. Rather than moving through a strictly linear series of stages, Simon’s journey unfolds across an interconnected countryside filled with towns, mansions, forests, caves, and other dangerous areas.

The core combat remains familiar to Castlevania fans. Simon attacks with his whip, collects hearts from defeated enemies, and can find upgraded weapons and useful subweapons along the way. Hearts serve as currency for purchasing items, while experience gained from enemies helps increase Simon’s strength. The game also features a day-and-night cycle: enemies become more threatening after dark, and the atmosphere changes as towns and outdoor paths take on a more ominous character.

Exploration is central to the experience. Town residents offer hints, merchants sell equipment, and hidden paths or items reward players who search carefully. Progress depends on finding the right Dracula remains and using special items to reach and complete the game’s mansions. Some clues are famously vague, so keeping track of conversations and experimenting with the environment is part of the challenge.

Compared with the original Castlevania, Simon’s Quest is less about precise, room-by-room platforming and more about discovery, backtracking, and gradually improving Simon’s abilities. Its unusual structure, moody setting, and distinctive soundtrack have helped it remain a memorable NES adventure, even if its cryptic guidance can test a player’s patience. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and revisit this unconventional chapter in Konami’s classic series.
