Fist Of The North Star

Fist Of The North Star brings the post-apocalyptic martial arts world of Kenshiro to the NES in this 1989 action game from Shouei System, published by Taxan. Based on the popular manga and anime, it follows Kenshiro as he travels through a devastated landscape, battling hostile fighters and other dangers with the deadly techniques of Hokuto Shinken.

The game plays as a side-scrolling beat-’em-up with a strong platforming edge. Kenshiro advances through hazardous stages, using punches, kicks, jumps, and crouching attacks to deal with enemies approaching from across the screen. Timing is important, since opponents can surround him quickly and careless attacks leave him open. Defeated enemies can provide useful power-ups, helping Kenshiro improve his strength and endurance as the journey continues. The action is straightforward to learn, but the stiff enemy patterns and limited margin for error give the game a distinctly old-school level of challenge.

Its presentation captures the rough, dusty atmosphere associated with Fist Of The North Star. Ruined scenery, aggressive gangs, and larger-than-life combat encounters create a fitting backdrop for Kenshiro’s relentless advance. Fans of the source material will recognize the character and setting, while players unfamiliar with the series can still enjoy a compact NES brawler built around simple controls and constant forward momentum.

Fist Of The North Star is not a polished modern-style adaptation, but its direct combat, recognizable license, and demanding arcade-inspired design make it an interesting snapshot of late-1980s licensed game development. It is a worthwhile choice for retro players curious about obscure NES action titles, and a convenient game to play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
