About Hudson’s Adventure Island 3
Hudson’s Adventure Island 3 is a fast, demanding side-scrolling platformer built around careful movement, quick reactions, and constant resource management. Released for the NES in 1988 by Hudson Soft, it once again puts Master Higgins on a journey across a chain of tropical islands, where hazards appear in nearly every stretch of ground.
The basic objective is familiar: run from left to right, collect fruit to keep Higgins’ energy from running out, and reach the goal before time expires. His health is closely tied to the food he collects, so missing items or taking too long can turn an otherwise manageable stage into a desperate dash. Eggs provide useful power-ups, including weapons such as the boomerang and other equipment that makes enemies and obstacles easier to handle. The skateboard also changes the feel of a stage, offering faster movement while making precise control more challenging.
Adventure Island 3 expands the series’ formula with a world map and a selection of dinosaur companions. These allies have different abilities, giving players more options for dealing with enemies, jumps, and environmental hazards. Choosing when to use a companion, and keeping it safe, adds a small layer of strategy to the otherwise straightforward action. The islands themselves include familiar beaches as well as more varied terrain, with platforms, moving hazards, pits, and enemies designed to punish careless play.
The game remains appealing because its rules are easy to understand but difficult to master. Short bursts of progress can quickly become tense when food is scarce and a checkpoint is still far away. For anyone interested in classic NES platformers, Adventure Island 3 offers a brisk, unforgiving challenge with colorful presentation and plenty of replay value.
