About Legacy Of The Wizard
Legacy of the Wizard is a challenging NES action-adventure game from Nihon Falcom, released in 1989 and published in North America by Brøderbund. Known in Japan as Dragon Slayer IV, it combines side-scrolling platforming with maze exploration, light puzzle solving, and a distinctly old-school sense of discovery.
The game takes place beneath the home of the Drasle family, where a sprawling underground labyrinth hides the pieces of a powerful crown. Rather than following a straightforward route, you explore interconnected rooms, search for hidden passages, collect useful items, and work out which obstacles can be overcome with each family member’s abilities. The Drasles are not interchangeable: each character has different strengths, weapons, and movement options, so progress often depends on choosing the right person for a particular section of the maze.
That structure gives Legacy of the Wizard much of its appeal. A room that seems impossible with one character may become accessible after switching to another, while keys, blocks, spells, and equipment gradually reveal new paths. The game offers little hand-holding, and its cryptic layout can be punishing, but careful mapping and experimentation make its secrets satisfying to uncover. Enemies and hazards fill the labyrinth, adding pressure to what is already a demanding exploration game.
With colorful 8-bit graphics, atmospheric music, and a large world packed into a single-player NES adventure, Legacy of the Wizard feels unusual even among difficult games of its era. It is best suited to players who enjoy nonlinear exploration and solving environmental puzzles without constant guidance. If you want to experience one of the NES’s more distinctive cult classics, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
