About Rygar
Rygar is a side-scrolling action game with platforming, exploration, and light role-playing elements, released for the NES in 1987 by Tecmo. You play as Rygar, a warrior exploring the mythic land of Argool, where hostile creatures and dangerous terrain stand between him and his mission to restore peace.
His signature weapon is the Diskarmor, a bladed shield attached to a chain that can strike enemies from a useful distance. Timing matters, since many opponents attack from awkward positions and some areas leave little room to maneuver. As Rygar travels through forests, caves, and other hazardous regions, he can collect power-ups that improve his abilities and make later challenges more manageable. The NES version also includes an experience system, allowing Rygar to grow stronger as he defeats enemies and explores the world.
Unlike a purely linear platformer, Rygar mixes traditional side-view stages with overhead exploration sections. These areas connect the adventure and give the game a broader sense of place, while conversations with sages provide guidance and useful items. The result is a distinctive blend of arcade-style combat and early console adventure design. It can be demanding, particularly when enemies are placed to punish careless movement, but learning attack range, enemy patterns, and the layout of each area makes steady progress satisfying.
With its unusual weapon, ancient-world atmosphere, and combination of action and exploration, Rygar has a character all its own among NES games. Whether revisiting a Tecmo classic or discovering it for the first time, players can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and experience one of the system’s more ambitious action adventures.
