About Arkanoid
Arkanoid brings the classic brick-breaking formula to the NES with a distinctly science-fiction edge. You control the Vaus, a small paddle-like spacecraft, and guide a bouncing energy ball across a series of tightly designed screens. The objective is simple—clear the wall of blocks—but keeping the ball in play becomes increasingly demanding as angles change, blocks resist repeated hits, and the playfield grows more difficult to read.
Breaking certain blocks releases capsules that can dramatically alter the action. Depending on the power-up, the Vaus may grow wider, slow the ball, catch it for a carefully aimed launch, or gain a laser weapon capable of shooting blocks directly. These abilities create useful decisions in the middle of a stage: grab a capsule immediately, position yourself to catch it safely, or focus on keeping the ball from escaping. The later screens also introduce more complex arrangements, giving the game a steady sense of escalation without abandoning its straightforward controls.
The NES version preserves the focused, arcade-style structure of Taito’s original while adapting it neatly to a home console. Its controls are easy to understand, but clearing a full stage requires concentration, timing, and a willingness to recover from awkward rebounds. The sparse space setting, electronic presentation, and recognizable Vaus give the familiar paddle-and-ball concept more personality than a basic Breakout clone.
Released for the NES in 1987 and developed and published by Taito, Arkanoid is a strong choice for short sessions or determined attempts to improve a score.
