About Bad Dudes
Bad Dudes is a side-scrolling beat ’em up that brings Data East’s arcade action to the NES. Released in 1990, it places you in control of Blade or Striker, two street fighters recruited to rescue President Ronnie after he is kidnapped by ninjas. The premise is deliberately over-the-top, but the appeal comes from the direct, satisfying combat and the game’s unmistakable late-1980s arcade attitude.
Each stage moves from left to right through hostile territory filled with regular ninja opponents and tougher encounters. Blade and Striker rely on punches, kicks, jumping attacks, and well-timed movement to push through crowded screens. Defeated enemies can leave behind useful items, including temporary weapons and food that restores health, adding a little variety to the otherwise straightforward fighting. Players need to balance aggressive attacks with careful positioning, since enemies can surround the character quickly and health is limited.
The NES version includes a one-player game and a two-player mode, making it a solid choice for a cooperative-style retro session, even though the action is not as technically expansive as the arcade original. Its compact stages, responsive controls, colorful presentation, and intentionally cheesy premise give it a distinctive charm. It is the kind of game that rewards learning enemy patterns while still being easy to understand within seconds.
Whether you remember it from the arcades or are discovering it through RetroCloud, Bad Dudes offers a focused slice of classic beat ’em up design. If you want to play online on your browser, this NES adaptation is an enjoyable way to revisit one of Data East’s most recognizable action games.
