About Bubble Bobble
Bubble Bobble is a classic single-screen platform game that turns simple ideas into surprisingly demanding arcade action. Released for the NES in 1988 by Taito, it stars the dragon duo Bub and Bob, who must clear a series of monster-filled stages after being transformed from human form.
Each screen is built around platforms, gaps, ladders, and enemies that can be trapped inside bubbles. Bub and Bob blow bubbles to capture monsters, then jump into those bubbles to burst them before the trapped enemies escape. Defeated foes release useful bonus items, including fruit and other collectibles, adding a welcome risk-and-reward element to the fast-moving action. The dragons can also jump on their own bubbles, creating extra routes through the compact level layouts and helping players reach enemies from above.
The NES version preserves the game’s most recognizable appeal: short, focused stages that are easy to understand but increasingly tricky to complete. Enemy movement, limited space, and the need to position bubbles carefully make each screen feel like a small puzzle wrapped inside a platformer. Two-player cooperative play is a major part of the experience, allowing both dragons to work together, trap enemies, and cover different sides of the screen. It can also become wonderfully chaotic when players compete for bonuses or accidentally disrupt each other’s plans.
With colorful visuals, memorable sound effects, and a cheerful presentation that contrasts with its tougher later stages, Bubble Bobble remains an approachable but skillful NES game. Whether revisiting it for its arcade roots or discovering its cooperative play for the first time, players can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and experience one of Taito’s most enduring classics.
