About Contra

Contra is a fast, demanding run-and-gun shooter that helped define the action games of the NES era. Released for the NES in 1988, it puts one or two players in control of heavily armed commandos battling the Red Falcon organization and its alien forces. The action moves through a series of varied stages, including jungle terrain, enemy bases, a waterfall, a snow-covered area, and increasingly strange alien environments.

The controls are direct but require sharp timing. Players run, jump, crouch, and fire in eight directions while weaving around soldiers, turrets, traps, flying enemies, and relentless waves of projectiles. Weapon power-ups appear inside airborne capsules and can transform the basic rifle into more specialized firepower, including spread shots and rapid-fire weapons. Choosing when to grab an upgrade—and keeping it after taking a hit—adds a small but important layer of strategy to the otherwise frantic action.

Contra’s difficulty is a major part of its identity. Enemy patterns can be memorized, but success still depends on quick reactions, careful positioning, and learning when to advance rather than rush forward. The two-player mode makes the challenge especially entertaining, allowing both players to fight through the stages together while sharing the pressure of limited lives and dangerous boss encounters.

Developed and published by Konami, the NES version captures the arcade game’s energetic pace while making it a natural fit for home play. Its crisp controls, memorable weapon system, varied level design, and cooperative action have kept it popular with retro players for decades. Whether revisiting a childhood favorite or discovering it for the first time, Contra remains a compact test of arcade skill. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and experience this influential NES classic without losing its straightforward, hard-earned sense of achievement.
