About Deadly Towers
Deadly Towers is an action RPG for the NES that sends Prince Myer into a sprawling maze of towers to confront an evil wizard. Released in 1987 by Lenar and published by Brøderbund, it blends overhead exploration with side-scrolling platform sections, creating a strange and often demanding adventure that feels unlike many other console games of its era.
Much of the game involves navigating confusing rooms, searching for useful items, and fighting enemies that can quickly overwhelm an unprepared player. Myer attacks with a sword and can improve his equipment during the journey, while magic and other discoveries help him survive the towers’ traps and hostile creatures. The environments are interconnected and deliberately disorienting, with hidden passages and dead ends making careful exploration essential. Enemies also return after leaving and re-entering areas, so simply clearing a room is rarely a permanent solution.
Deadly Towers is particularly well known for its steep difficulty. The controls and level design can take time to understand, and progress often depends on memorizing routes, learning enemy patterns, and recognizing where valuable items are hidden. It is not a relaxed adventure, but that harsh design gives the game a distinctive challenge for players who enjoy obscure NES titles and punishing exploration.
Its unusual combination of role-playing ideas, maze navigation, and platforming makes Deadly Towers an interesting snapshot of early console experimentation. Whether you remember it from the original NES release or are discovering it for the first time, RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and revisit one of the system’s more eccentric adventures.
