About Double Dragon 3 The Sacred Stones
Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones brings the Lee brothers back for another side-scrolling beat ’em up adventure on the NES. Released in 1991, this Technos game sends Billy and Jimmy around the world in search of three sacred stones, with the action moving through locations including New York, Japan, Italy, and Egypt. Each stage is packed with street fighters, martial artists, and other dangerous opponents who must be overcome before the journey can continue.
The basic combat remains familiar: punch, kick, grab, throw, and use weapons dropped by defeated enemies. Double Dragon III also gives the brothers a broader range of techniques than earlier entries, including powerful jumping attacks and moves that reward careful timing. Depending on progress, additional fighters can join the action, giving the game a little more variety than a straightforward run through the usual brawling lineup.
The NES version is designed for one or two players, and cooperative play is often the best way to handle its demanding stages. Enemies can surround the heroes quickly, while hazards and tough encounters punish careless movement. It is not an easy game, but learning enemy patterns and working together makes the challenge more manageable. The international setting also helps it stand apart from the series’ more familiar urban beatdowns.
Published by Acclaim, The Sacred Stones has the direct, arcade-inspired feel associated with classic Double Dragon, while adding a globe-spanning quest and a more varied cast of playable martial artists. Players who enjoy old-school combat, chunky NES graphics, and demanding co-op action can play online on your browser through RetroCloud, revisiting one of the more distinctive entries in the series.
