About Ghosts’n Goblins

Ghosts’n Goblins is a notoriously demanding side-scrolling action platformer that puts you in control of the knight Arthur as he ventures through a haunted countryside to rescue Princess Prin-Prin. The NES version, released by Capcom in 1986, brings the arcade classic’s grim fairy-tale atmosphere home with graveyards, ruined landscapes, eerie forests, and relentless supernatural enemies.

Arthur attacks with a range of thrown weapons, beginning with the familiar lance and discovering other options as he progresses. His armor offers some protection, but a single hit knocks it away, leaving him in his underwear; take another hit and the stage begins again. That simple rule makes every jump and enemy encounter feel important. Players must deal with zombies rising from the ground, flying creatures, demons, and other hazards while navigating platforms and ladders under a strict time limit.

The game’s challenge comes from more than aggressive enemies. Arthur’s jumps are committed once begun, weapons can be awkward to use at close range, and some sections demand careful movement rather than reckless charging. Reaching the end is only part of the test, as the game is known for sending determined players back through its stages at a higher level of difficulty before the true conclusion can be reached.

Ghosts’n Goblins supports two players through alternating turns, making its punishing progression a natural challenge to share. Its bleak setting, distinctive character animation, memorable weapon system, and unforgiving design have helped it remain a defining NES action game. Whether you remember it from childhood or are tackling it for the first time, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and experience one of Capcom’s most demanding 8-bit adventures.
