About Gradius
Gradius is a classic horizontal shoot ’em up that puts you in control of the Vic Viper, a small starfighter battling through hostile space and the defenses of the Bacterion forces. Released for the NES in 1986 by Konami, it brings the arcade series’ distinctive mix of fast action, careful positioning, and strategic weapon management to Nintendo’s console.
The Vic Viper begins with basic firepower, but defeated enemies release power capsules that move the selection marker along a bar at the bottom of the screen. Choosing when to activate each upgrade is central to surviving. You can increase your ship’s speed, add missiles, switch firing patterns, equip a laser, deploy Options that mimic your attacks, or activate a protective shield. Collecting capsules is tempting, but advancing to a more powerful upgrade can mean passing up a useful defensive option, so every choice carries some risk.
Each stage scrolls steadily across a colorful but dangerous landscape, with enemy formations, turrets, terrain hazards, and distinctive set pieces demanding constant attention. The game is especially known for its imposing boss encounters and memorable imagery, including the famous Moai heads. Losing a powered-up ship can make the next stretch much harder, giving Gradius a sharp difficulty curve and encouraging players to learn enemy patterns rather than simply rush forward.
The NES version supports two players, with turns taken one at a time, making it a good fit for friendly competition and comparing progress. Its responsive controls, recognizable power-up system, and demanding arcade-style design still give each attempt a clear sense of improvement. Whether you remember it from the 1980s or are discovering it today, Gradius is an excellent game to play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
