About Gun Smoke

Gun Smoke is a western-themed vertical-scrolling shooter that brings Capcom’s arcade action to the NES in 1988. You play as Billy Bob, a gunslinger riding through frontier territory while battling gangs of outlaws and facing notorious wanted criminals at the end of each stage. Rather than moving through a traditional side-scrolling platform layout, the action advances upward across dusty trails, towns, bridges, and other dangerous stretches of the Old West.

The controls give Gun Smoke much of its distinctive character. Billy Bob can fire in different directions, allowing you to deal with enemies approaching from ahead or closing in from either side. Managing those shots while avoiding bullets, riders, obstacles, and enemies rushing onto the screen is the central challenge. Power-ups can improve your weapon, while certain items and horses provide useful advantages during a run. The screen can become crowded quickly, so staying alert is just as important as aiming accurately.

The NES version preserves the game’s compact arcade structure and straightforward objective: keep moving, survive each section, and defeat the outlaw waiting at the end. Its colorful presentation, Western music, and brisk pace give it a personality that stands apart from Capcom’s more familiar science-fiction and fantasy shooters. At the same time, the game demands practice, since enemy patterns and limited opportunities for recovery can make careless progress short-lived.

As a one-player NES release, Gun Smoke is best suited to focused sessions and repeated attempts to improve your route and score. It is an appealing choice for players who enjoy vintage arcade shooters with a strong setting and simple, responsive controls. If you want to revisit this unusual Capcom classic, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
