About Hatris

Hatris is a single-player puzzle game that trades Tetris’s familiar blocks for a much more playful challenge: stacking hats. Released for the NES in 1992 by Bullet-Proof Software, it asks you to build vertical towers from falling hats and clear them by bringing five hats of the same style together. The catch is that hats do not simply vanish when they touch. They must be arranged carefully, and every new piece can affect the balance and position of the stacks already on the playfield.

The action takes place on a compact, uncluttered screen, with hats dropping from above while you guide them into the available columns. Some hats can be moved as part of an existing stack, giving you a chance to reorganize the board instead of relying only on quick placement. That added control is useful, but it also makes each decision matter: a poorly positioned tower can block useful spaces and leave little room for the next wave of hats.

As the stacks grow, the pace and pressure increase. Clearing a group at the right moment opens space and can set up another match, while allowing too many mismatched hats to accumulate eventually leaves the board crowded. Hatris is easy to understand but rewards planning, timing, and the ability to recognize a good move before the screen becomes difficult to manage.

Its unusual hat-stacking theme gives the NES version a distinct personality, while the straightforward rules make it an inviting choice for short sessions or longer attempts at a higher score. If you enjoy classic falling-piece puzzles with a different rhythm from ordinary block matching, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
