About Hydlide

Hydlide is an early action RPG that helped introduce Japanese computer-style adventure design to a wider console audience. On the NES, the game places you in the kingdom of Fairyland, where the peaceful Princess Ann has been transformed into three fairies by the evil demon Varalys. As the young warrior Jim, you must explore the countryside, find the missing fairies, grow stronger, and ultimately confront the threat behind the kingdom’s troubles.

The game uses a top-down perspective and real-time combat rather than turn-based battles. Enemies roam the landscape, and attacking means moving directly into them while managing your position and timing. Jim can switch between attack and defense modes, making even ordinary encounters more deliberate than they first appear. Defeated enemies provide experience, allowing him to gain levels and improve his chances against stronger creatures. Exploration also involves searching for useful items, discovering magic, and learning how the various parts of the world fit together.

Hydlide’s compact world has a distinctly old-school rhythm. Progress is not always explained outright, so finding the right route, item, or clue can be as important as winning a fight. A day-and-night cycle adds atmosphere, while healing and resource management encourage you to pay attention to your surroundings instead of rushing forward.

Released for the NES in 1989 by FCI, with development by T & E Soft, Hydlide is a fascinating example of an early console action RPG. Its simple presentation and sometimes demanding design may feel unusual today, but they also give the adventure a memorable sense of discovery. It remains worth exploring for players interested in the roots of the genre, and you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
