About Joe & Mac
Joe & Mac brings Data East’s prehistoric arcade action to the NES in this 1992 platform game developed by Elite. You play as one of two cavemen, Joe or Mac, battling across a colorful Stone Age world to rescue their kidnapped girlfriends. The setting mixes primitive landscapes with dinosaurs and other exaggerated prehistoric enemies, giving the game a playful comic-book tone rather than a realistic vision of the past.
The action is built around side-scrolling stages filled with enemies, hazards, and straightforward platforming. Joe and Mac attack with primitive weapons such as stone axes, striking foes from a short distance while moving through forests, caves, and other rugged environments. Defeated enemies can provide different weapons, adding some variety to the otherwise direct run-and-attack gameplay. Each area eventually leads to a larger enemy encounter, keeping the journey focused on steady progress and combat.
The NES version preserves the central appeal of the arcade original while presenting it as a home console adventure. It is not a slow or highly technical platformer; success depends more on timing attacks, learning enemy patterns, and avoiding careless hits. The two-player option is a particularly welcome feature, allowing two players to take on the prehistoric journey together rather than competing for turns.
Joe & Mac is a good fit for players who enjoy colorful action games with simple controls, humorous character designs, and a distinctly early-1990s arcade feel. Its compact stages and immediately understandable objectives make it easy to pick up, while the enemy-filled routes provide plenty of frantic moments. If you want to revisit this unusual caveman adventure, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
