About Karnov

Karnov is a one-player action platformer that puts a remarkably tough strongman on a dangerous journey through deserts, ruins, forests, and other hostile terrain. Originally an arcade game from Data East, the NES version arrived in 1988 and preserves its straightforward but demanding design: move steadily to the right, climb ladders, avoid hazards, and clear the screen of enemies before pushing onward.

Karnov’s main weapon is a stream of fireballs, but useful items can be found throughout the stages to give him additional ways to attack. Bombs, boomerangs, axes, and other power-ups can make difficult sections more manageable, although supplies are limited and choosing when to use them matters. Enemies arrive from several directions, while traps, water, narrow platforms, and awkward jumps make careless movement just as dangerous as any creature. The screen can become crowded quickly, so learning enemy patterns and keeping a safe position are essential.

The game has a distinctive visual personality. Karnov himself is an imposing figure who runs, jumps, climbs, and attacks with exaggerated physicality, while the stages mix rugged landscapes with strange creatures and ancient-looking obstacles. It is not a gentle platformer; progress depends on patience, memorizing layouts, and making the most of every life.

That direct arcade feel makes Karnov a good choice for players who enjoy compact, challenging NES adventures rather than elaborate role-playing systems or lengthy narratives. The controls are easy to understand, but reaching the later stages takes practice. On RetroCloud, you can play online on your browser and experience Data East’s unusual blend of platform action, projectile combat, and relentless arcade difficulty.
