About Klax
Klax is a fast-paced puzzle game built around a deceptively simple idea: catch colored tiles as they roll toward you, then stack them to create matching lines. On the NES, a moving conveyor feeds tiles onto a small playfield, while you control a paddle at the front edge. Catching tiles in the right order is essential, since you can only carry a limited number before placing them into the grid.
Matching three or more tiles of the same color clears them, whether they form a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. The challenge comes from managing several concerns at once. You need to watch the conveyor, decide where each tile belongs, and avoid letting unwanted pieces pile up. Tiles can also be bounced or repositioned with careful paddle movement, giving the game more depth than its basic rules initially suggest.
Klax is structured around objectives that become increasingly demanding, including clearing a required number of lines and handling faster, more crowded tile patterns. Missing a catch or allowing too many tiles to reach the end can quickly turn a manageable round into a scramble. Its bright colors, sharp sound effects, and steadily rising pace give every stage an arcade-like sense of pressure.
Originally developed and published by Tengen, Klax arrived on the NES in 1990 as a focused conversion of the popular arcade puzzle game. The NES version preserves the quick reactions and tactical planning that define the original while making the action easy to pick up for short sessions. Two-player support adds another way to enjoy the game, whether competing directly or comparing progress.
If you enjoy classic puzzle games that reward both timing and organization, Klax remains an engaging choice. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and revisit this distinctive piece of NES arcade history without losing its satisfyingly frantic rhythm.
