About Kung Fu
Kung Fu brings the straightforward intensity of the arcade beat ’em up to the NES in a compact, demanding package. Released in 1985, the game puts you in control of Thomas, a martial artist fighting through five stages to rescue Sylvia from the criminal mastermind Mr. X. Each stage scrolls horizontally as enemies rush in from both sides, forcing you to keep moving while watching for attacks from the front and behind.
Thomas has a small but useful set of moves: standing and crouching punches, kicks, and jumps. Crouching punches are especially valuable against low attacks, while kicks offer greater reach and help create space when several opponents close in. The action is built around timing rather than complicated combos, so success depends on reading enemy movements, choosing the right attack, and avoiding unnecessary hits. Knives and other projectiles add another layer of pressure, and the stage-end encounters require a more careful approach than the regular waves of fighters.
The NES version captures the distinctive structure of the original Kung-Fu Master while giving the game a brisk, approachable feel. Its five-floor progression, recognizable enemy patterns, countdown timer, and limited health make every advance feel earned. A two-player mode lets players take turns tackling the stages, making it a good choice for short competitive sessions or shared attempts at mastering the route.
Developed by Irem and published by Nintendo, Kung Fu is one of the NES library’s clearest early examples of side-scrolling martial arts action. It is simple to understand but surprisingly easy to underestimate, with difficulty that rewards practice. For a quick trip back to classic console combat, RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and experience this sharp, foundational beat ’em up for yourself.
