Might And Magic

Might and Magic brings New World Computing’s computer role-playing series to the NES in this 1992 release from Sammy. Set in the fantasy world of VARN, the game puts you in charge of a party of adventurers investigating the mysteries surrounding the land and searching for the fabled Inner Sanctum. It is a substantial, exploration-focused RPG rather than a straightforward action game, with much of its appeal coming from careful party management and discovery.

Players assemble a team of up to six characters, choosing from familiar fantasy classes such as knights, archers, clerics, and sorcerers. Each member has different strengths, equipment needs, and spell abilities, so building a balanced group matters. Combat takes place through menu-driven, turn-based commands, letting you decide when to attack, defend, cast magic, or use special abilities. Victories provide experience and treasure, while towns offer opportunities to rest, improve the party, buy supplies, and prepare for the next expedition.

The world is viewed from a first-person perspective as you move through outdoor areas, settlements, mazes, and dungeons one step at a time. Maps, clues, locked passages, traps, and hidden discoveries make note-taking useful, especially when exploring the game’s more confusing areas. Its interface and pace can feel demanding by modern standards, but that slower rhythm gives every successful journey a sense of progress.

With its blend of character development, tactical battles, and open-ended exploration, Might and Magic offers a distinctive role-playing experience on Nintendo’s console. RetroCloud lets players play online on your browser, making it easy to revisit this unusual NES adaptation and its old-school fantasy challenge.
