Shinobi

Shinobi brings Sega’s fast, close-quarters ninja action to the NES in this 1989 release published by Tengen. You play as Joe Musashi, moving through side-scrolling stages while battling armed soldiers, creatures, and other dangerous opponents connected to the game’s criminal underworld. The objective is simple but demanding: advance through hostile territory, rescue captives, and survive the bosses waiting at the end of each area.

Joe’s main weapons are his throwing stars and martial-arts attacks. Shuriken let you deal with enemies from a distance, while punches, kicks, jumps, and crouching are essential when opponents get too close. The action rewards quick reactions, but rushing blindly usually leads to trouble. Enemies can appear from several directions, projectiles require careful timing, and narrow platforms make positioning just as important as attacking. Power-ups found during the stages can improve Joe’s offensive abilities, giving you a reason to search rather than simply run toward the next screen.

The NES version has its own look and feel, with compact stages, challenging enemy patterns, and a presentation shaped by the hardware rather than attempting to reproduce every detail of the arcade original. Its difficulty can be unforgiving, especially when learning boss patterns, but the controls are straightforward enough that improvement feels earned. Each successful run comes from recognizing threats, conserving attacks, and knowing when a jump or retreat is safer than a strike.

With its blend of platforming, combat, and classic ninja atmosphere, Shinobi remains a focused action game for players who enjoy repetition and mastery.
