About Solomon’s Key

Solomon’s Key is a challenging puzzle-platform game that rewards careful planning as much as quick reflexes. Released for the NES in 1987 by Tecmo, it places you in control of the wizard Dana, who must recover the Solomon’s Key and restore the world’s magical balance. Each stage is a compact room filled with platforms, ladders, enemies, hazards, and a door leading to the exit.

Dana’s main ability is the power to create and destroy orange blocks. A newly formed block can provide a platform, block an enemy, or help you reach a key, while removing the wrong block can leave you stranded or expose you to danger. Keys must be collected before the exit can be used, and many rooms are built around finding the correct route through limited space. Dana can also use fireballs to defeat certain enemies, but combat is usually secondary to solving the room’s layout.

The game begins with puzzles that teach its basic ideas, then steadily demands more precise timing and more careful use of every available block. Enemies move through the rooms, and some objects can change the situation unexpectedly, so simply rushing toward the exit rarely works. Hidden items and bonus areas add another layer for players who enjoy exploring beyond the obvious solution.

With its single-screen stages, crisp controls, and increasingly intricate puzzles, Solomon’s Key remains a distinctive NES experience. It can be frustrating when a solution is almost within reach, but that frustration makes a successful escape especially satisfying. Whether you remember it from the original console or want to play online on your browser, RetroCloud offers a convenient way to revisit Tecmo’s clever blend of platforming and logic.
