About Stadium Events

Stadium Events is a track-and-field sports game for the NES, released in 1987 by Bandai and developed by Human Entertainment. Rather than following a story or featuring a traditional roster of athletes, it puts the focus on quick reflexes, timing, and physical competition across a selection of athletic events.

The game is designed for use with the Family Fun Fitness mat, later known in North America as the Power Pad. Players step, run, and press the mat’s sections to control their athlete, making the game feel very different from a standard button-based sports title. Events include races and field competitions such as the 100-meter dash, hurdles, long jump, high jump, and relay events. Each discipline calls for a slightly different approach: rapid footwork is important in sprints, while jumping events depend on building speed and timing the takeoff correctly.

With support for two players, Stadium Events works best as a head-to-head challenge. The competition is simple to understand, but maintaining speed and accuracy can become surprisingly demanding, especially when both players are trying to improve their times or distances. The unusual mat-based controls also give it a distinctive place in the NES sports library, capturing the novelty of bringing arcade-style athletics into the living room.

Today, Stadium Events is remembered both for its physical gameplay and its place in the early history of Nintendo’s floor-mat accessories. On RetroCloud, players can revisit this unconventional NES release and play online on your browser, experiencing its short events, energetic pacing, and competitive two-player format. It is a particularly interesting choice for fans of motion-controlled games and unusual entries in the classic console sports genre.
