About Track & Field
Track & Field brings Konami’s arcade-style athletics competition to the NES in a fast, wonderfully demanding package. Released in 1987, the game puts one or two players into a series of Olympic-inspired events, where success depends less on complicated commands than on rhythm, timing, and quick fingers.
The familiar 100-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles challenge you to alternate the buttons rapidly while keeping control of your runner. In the long jump, javelin, and hammer throw, building speed is only part of the task; the angle and timing of your final action determine whether you produce a modest result, a record-setting effort, or a foul. The high jump changes the pace again, asking for a well-timed approach and a precise takeoff. Each event has its own technique, so simply mashing the buttons is rarely enough to win consistently.
Bright stadium visuals, clear event presentations, and upbeat sound effects give the NES version an energetic sports-show atmosphere, even within the system’s technical limits. Competition is especially enjoyable with two players, as a seemingly small difference in timing can decide an entire round. There is no elaborate story to distract from the central appeal: learning the controls, improving your form, and chasing better distances, heights, and times.
Track & Field is a straightforward but surprisingly tense test of coordination. Its short events make it easy to pick up, while the demanding timing gives experienced players plenty of reason to return. Whether you remember it from the arcade or are discovering the NES adaptation for the first time, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and experience one of Konami’s most recognizable classic sports games.
