About Yo! Noid
Yo! Noid is a colorful NES platformer starring the mischievous Noid, the mascot created for Domino’s Pizza. Released in 1990 by Capcom and developed by Now Production, it sends the character through city streets, construction areas, parks, and other hazardous locations in a race to stop Mr. Green’s troublemaking. Its licensed origins are obvious, but the game has enough distinctive mechanics to stand apart from a simple advertisement.
The Noid attacks with his trademark yo-yo, using it to deal with enemies and clear a path through scrolling stages filled with platforms, pits, moving obstacles, and useful items. Careful timing is important, since the game’s compact levels can become surprisingly demanding as hazards are combined and enemy placement grows less forgiving. Along the way, players can collect pizza boxes and other bonuses, while bonus rounds take the form of competitive pizza-eating contests against Mr. Green. These contests add a memorable change of pace and reward quick button presses.
The presentation is bright and cartoon-like, with lively animation and a playful soundtrack that suit the character’s advertising roots. Beneath that cheerful surface, Yo! Noid offers a fairly traditional action-platforming challenge: learn enemy patterns, judge jumps accurately, and make the most of limited opportunities to recover. It is a single-player experience, best suited to short sessions for players who enjoy familiar 8-bit mechanics with an unusual mascot at the center.
On the NES, Yo! Noid remains an interesting snapshot of early-1990s licensed gaming. It may not be as polished or celebrated as Capcom’s biggest platformers, but its yo-yo combat, pizza-themed challenges, and oddball personality give it a character all its own.
