About Castelian
Castelian is a distinctive NES platform game from 1991, developed by Hewson and published by Triffix. Rather than moving across a conventional side-scrolling stage, you guide a small green character around the outside of a tall, cylindrical tower. The structure turns as you move, creating an unusual sense of depth and making the route ahead change with every step.
The objective is to climb from the base to the top, using platforms, gaps, and moving sections to work out a safe path upward. Your character can jump between ledges, but the narrow surfaces and rotating viewpoint demand careful timing. A missed jump usually means a long fall, so progress comes from learning the layout and judging each leap instead of rushing blindly. The tower’s curved design is the game’s defining feature: a platform that seems out of reach may come into view as the building rotates, while another route can disappear around the far side.
Castelian is not a sprawling adventure with a large cast or elaborate plot. Its appeal lies in the compact challenge of mastering each tower, with simple controls supporting an inventive visual concept. The mixture of platforming, spatial awareness, and light puzzle-solving gives it a character quite unlike most NES games of its period. The presentation is also notable for attempting a rotating, pseudo-3D environment within the console’s limitations.
Players who enjoy unusual retro experiments and methodical platforming may find Castelian especially rewarding. It can feel awkward at first, but once the rotation and jumping rhythm become familiar, reaching the summit becomes a satisfying test of patience and precision. On RetroCloud, you can play online on your browser and revisit this curious 1991 NES release without needing the original cartridge.
