About Castlevania 3 Dracula’s Curse

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is a demanding NES action-platformer from Konami, released in 1990. Set in Transylvania in 1476, it follows Trevor Belmont on a journey to stop Dracula’s latest campaign of terror. The game returns to the side-scrolling combat of earlier Castlevania titles, but expands the formula with a branching map that lets you choose different routes through the adventure.

Trevor’s main weapon is the Belmont family whip, which can be upgraded during play, while familiar sub-weapons such as axes, daggers, holy water, and boomerangs provide useful options against the game’s varied enemies. Careful timing is essential, especially when dealing with flying creatures, moving platforms, stairways, and the many traps placed throughout the stages. Enemy patterns are often unforgiving, making patience and memorization just as important as quick reactions.

One of the game’s most memorable features is its recruitable companions. Depending on the path taken, Trevor can be joined by Grant Danasty, Sypha Belnades, or Alucard. Each character has a distinct style, from Grant’s agile movement to Sypha’s magic and Alucard’s ability to transform, adding meaningful variety to repeat playthroughs. You can travel with one companion at a time, so different route and character choices give the campaign a slightly different feel.

With its atmospheric gothic setting, striking music, challenging bosses, and non-linear structure, Dracula’s Curse stands as one of the richest Castlevania adventures on the NES. Whether you are revisiting Konami’s classic or discovering it for the first time, RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and experience Trevor’s dangerous journey without needing the original console.
