About Othello
Othello brings the classic strategy board game Reversi to the NES in a straightforward 1988 adaptation developed by Kawada and published by Acclaim. The game is played on an 8-by-8 board, with two players competing to control as many spaces as possible when the board is full. Each turn, a player places a disc so that one or more opposing discs are trapped between the new piece and another disc of the same color. Those captured discs are flipped, often turning a seemingly secure position into a dangerous one.
The rules are easy to understand, but winning requires careful planning. A strong move is not always the one that flips the most discs immediately. Players must watch the corners, manage the edges, and think ahead about how each placement will shape the opponent’s available moves. It is possible to gain a large lead early and still lose if the other player gains control of key spaces late in the match.
With no story or action-game distractions, Othello focuses entirely on the contest of positioning and prediction. Its clean presentation suits the NES hardware, making it simple to follow while preserving the tension of the original tabletop game. Matches can be enjoyed as a quiet one-on-one challenge, and the compact rules make it easy for newcomers to learn before they begin experimenting with more advanced tactics.
Whether you already know the board game or are discovering it for the first time, this NES version offers an accessible way to enjoy a classic head-to-head strategy experience. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser, making a quick match of Othello easy to revisit without setting up a physical board.
