About Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! brings the familiar television quiz show format to the NES in a straightforward adaptation released in 1988. Developed by Rare and published by GameTek, it challenges up to three players to prove their knowledge across a wide range of categories, from history and science to entertainment, geography, and everyday facts.

The game follows Jeopardy!’s distinctive question-and-answer format: clues are presented as answers, and contestants must respond with the correct question. A selection board displays categories and dollar values, with higher-value clues offering greater rewards. Players take turns choosing clues, trying to build the strongest score while avoiding incorrect responses that reduce their totals. Special opportunities such as Daily Doubles can turn a close game around, and the match concludes with Final Jeopardy!, where contestants wager part of their accumulated score on one last clue.

Designed for competitive play, the NES version works particularly well as a family or party game. Each participant can take control of a contestant, while the game handles the board, scoring, and computer-controlled opposition. The limited text and controller-based input give it a deliberate pace, but that rhythm suits the format: reading carefully and recalling the right fact matters more than quick reflexes.

Jeopardy! does not offer an adventure campaign or action gameplay. Its appeal comes from replayable trivia, tense wagers, and the satisfaction of recognizing an obscure clue before anyone else does. It is also an interesting snapshot of how a popular television game show was translated to an 8-bit console, with the emphasis placed firmly on knowledge and friendly competition.

Whether you are revisiting the NES original or discovering it for the first time, RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and enjoy a classic quiz game without needing the original cartridge.
