About Joust

Joust brings the distinctive arcade combat of Williams’ classic to the NES in a compact but demanding action game. Released in 1988, this port puts you on the back of a flying ostrich, battling enemy riders across platforms suspended above a dangerous lava-filled landscape. Your only controls are movement and flapping, but mastering that simple flight model takes practice. Tap the button to gain height, dive to build momentum, and strike opponents with your lance. The rider positioned higher during a collision wins, turning every encounter into a tense contest of timing and altitude.

Defeated enemies fall from their mounts, leaving eggs behind that can hatch into new threats if they are not collected or destroyed. The stages become increasingly hectic as more enemy riders appear, while the pterodactyl adds another danger for players who linger too long. Rather than relying on a traditional story, Joust focuses on survival, reflexes, and learning how the arena’s platforms shape each battle.

The NES version supports one or two players, making it equally suited to solo score chasing and competitive sessions with a friend. Its controls are easy to understand, yet the combination of hovering, diving, landing, and positioning gives each round more depth than its spare presentation suggests. The bright sprites and unusual medieval fantasy setting also give Joust a personality that still stands out among early console action games.

Developed by Williams Entertainment and published by HAL Laboratory, Joust is a faithful way to experience a foundational arcade design on Nintendo’s 8-bit console. If you enjoy games built around precise movement and quick decisions, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and see how long you can remain airborne.
