About Kid Niki Radical Ninja

Kid Niki: Radical Ninja is a fast, colorful action-platformer that brings Irem’s arcade-style ninja adventure to the NES in 1987. You play as Kid Niki, a small but determined warrior armed with a broad spinning sword, battling through side-scrolling stages filled with mischievous enemies, hazards, and tough platforming sections.

The sword is the heart of the game. Kid Niki can swing it around his body, making close-range combat both effective and entertaining, but enemies often approach from awkward angles or appear in groups, so timing matters. The sword can also be used while jumping, allowing you to clear obstacles and strike targets in midair. Special power-ups provide temporary advantages, including stronger sword attacks and other useful changes to Kid Niki’s abilities.

The game’s presentation has a playful Saturday-morning-cartoon quality, with bright scenery, exaggerated enemy designs, and a constant sense of motion. Its stages move through distinct environments as Kid Niki pushes forward on his quest to rescue Princess Margo, while enemies and platform layouts steadily test reflexes. It is not a slow, methodical ninja game; success comes from learning enemy patterns, keeping momentum, and knowing when to attack rather than simply charging ahead.

The NES version offers a satisfying challenge and supports two players, with players taking turns through the adventure. That makes it a fun choice for short competitive sessions as well as solo play, especially for fans of straightforward arcade-inspired platformers. Developed by Irem and published by Data East, Kid Niki: Radical Ninja captures the energetic personality of its coin-op roots while fitting naturally into the NES library. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and revisit this unusual, sword-spinning classic without needing the original cartridge.
