About Super Mario Bros 2

Super Mario Bros. 2 takes the familiar Mushroom Kingdom formula in a more unusual direction. Released for the NES in 1988 and developed and published by Nintendo, this platform game sends Mario and his companions into the dreamlike world of Subcon, where a mysterious villain has taken control. Rather than simply defeating enemies by jumping on them, players often need to pick up and throw objects to clear a path.

Before each stage, you can choose from Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Princess. Each character handles differently: Mario is well balanced, Luigi jumps higher but has less control, Toad is the quickest at picking things up, and Princess can briefly float after jumping. Those differences make character selection more than a cosmetic choice, especially as levels mix precise platforming with exploration and puzzle-like obstacles.

The stages are filled with doors, ladders, hidden areas, digging sections, and vegetables that can be pulled from the ground and tossed at enemies. You will face familiar foes such as Shy Guys and Snifits, along with hazards that demand careful timing. Hearts restore health, while coins collected during play can be used in the slot machine bonus game at the end of a level.

With its colorful presentation, distinctive mechanics, and wide range of playable characters, Super Mario Bros. 2 feels notably different from the other main NES entries while remaining approachable and fun to revisit. Two-player support lets players take turns tackling the adventure. Whether you are returning to Subcon or discovering it for the first time, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and experience one of Nintendo’s most inventive 8-bit platformers.
