About Nobunaga’s Ambition

Nobunaga’s Ambition brings Koei’s historical strategy series to the NES in a thoughtful simulation of Japan’s Sengoku, or Warring States, period. Released in 1989, it places you in the role of a daimyo competing to expand territory and bring the country under unified rule. Rather than controlling a single warrior through battles, you manage an entire domain and decide how its limited resources should be used.

Each turn calls for careful choices. You can develop land, collect and distribute rice, raise funds, recruit soldiers, strengthen defenses, and respond to the political pressures of neighboring territories. Diplomacy and alliances can be just as important as military force, especially when an ill-timed campaign leaves your provinces short of supplies. When armies clash, battles are resolved through strategic decisions rather than fast action, making preparation and logistics central to success.

The NES version condenses a remarkably detailed grand-strategy experience into a cartridge-era format. Its menus and statistics may seem austere at first, but they give every decision weight. A strong economy supports a larger army; a larger army can seize new land; and every gain creates fresh responsibilities. The game also supports up to eight players, allowing several people to take turns guiding rival domains in the same contest for power.

Nobunaga’s Ambition is a rewarding choice for players who enjoy deliberate planning, historical settings, and games where victory emerges from many small decisions. It is less about moment-to-moment excitement than reading the political landscape and building an advantage over time.
