About Rampart
Rampart is a strategy game built around the pressure of defending a chain of fortified positions. On the NES, Tengen’s adaptation, published by Jaleco in 1992, turns castle warfare into a compact contest of planning, timing, and quick repairs. Rather than controlling a single hero, you manage an entire defensive layout while enemy ships attack from the surrounding waters.
Each round moves through several phases. You place cannons inside your territory, fire on opposing targets, and then try to restore damaged fortifications before the next assault begins. The catch is that repairs use irregular wall pieces, so a seemingly simple breach can become a difficult puzzle. Cannons must be enclosed by walls to remain useful, and expanding your territory can provide more room for weapons while also making it harder to maintain a secure perimeter. Taking too long leaves your defenses exposed, but rushing can create gaps that are difficult to close.
The NES version supports two players, giving the game a competitive edge that suits its short, tense rounds. One player can also take on the computer, learning how to balance offense and defense without the pressure of a human opponent. Its controls are straightforward, yet every decision matters: where to place a castle, which targets to bombard, and how to fit the next repair piece into a broken wall.
With its unusual mix of artillery combat and tile-fitting strategy, Rampart feels unlike most NES action games. It rewards observation and adaptability more than reflexes alone, and its escalating battlefield chaos makes even a familiar match worth revisiting.
