About Skate Or Die!
Skate Or Die! brings the attitude and variety of late-1980s skateboarding to the NES. Released in 1988, this arcade-style sports game was developed by Electronic Arts and published for Nintendo’s console by Ultra Games. Rather than following a story, it offers a selection of events built around racing, trick performance, jumping, and direct competition.
The downhill event sends a skater through a twisting course filled with ramps, obstacles, and hazards, where steering carefully is just as important as maintaining speed. Jam provides a more focused head-to-head race, challenging players to navigate an obstacle course faster than an opponent. For players who prefer showing off, Freestyle takes place on a ramp and rewards well-timed spins, flips, and other aerial tricks. High Jump strips the challenge down to a single goal: launch from the ramp and achieve as much height as possible.
There is also Joust, a close-quarters contest in which two skaters try to knock one another from their boards. Its simple rules make it especially entertaining in a group, while the other events offer more room for practice and improving personal scores. With support for up to eight players taking turns, Skate Or Die! works well as a competitive party game, even though the action itself is built around individual runs and matches.
The controls take some practice, particularly when lining up a jump or keeping a fast downhill run under control. That learning curve is part of the appeal: successful tricks and clean races feel earned rather than automatic. Its bright presentation, varied events, and quick competitive format make it a distinctive NES sports title for anyone interested in classic skateboarding games.
