About Rollerball

Rollerball brings the fast, slightly chaotic fun of pinball to the NES in a straightforward game from HAL Laboratory. Released in 1990, it challenges you to keep the ball moving through a tall, multi-screen table while building a high score. Bumpers, targets, lanes, drop obstacles, and other table features reward accurate shots, but the ball can just as easily slip past the flippers and disappear down the drain.

The table is split across several connected sections, so the action is more than a single crowded screen. As the ball travels upward, you can open routes to different areas and aim for scoring opportunities while trying to maintain control. The scrolling playfield gives Rollerball a distinctive feel compared with many simpler NES pinball games, although its physics and ball movement can take some time to read. There are also bonus-play elements that add variety beyond simply keeping the ball alive.

Rollerball supports one or two players, with turns passing between players as each tries to beat the other’s score. That makes it a good fit for short competitive sessions, especially when both players enjoy learning the table’s layout and taking riskier shots. It is not a simulation aimed at pinball purists; its appeal comes from the compact NES presentation, unpredictable rebounds, and the satisfying challenge of improving one run at a time.

For fans of early console pinball, HAL’s game is an interesting snapshot of how the genre was adapted to Nintendo’s hardware. You can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and revisit its bright tables, simple controls, and demanding score-chasing gameplay.
