About Snake’s Revenge
Snake’s Revenge is a stealth-action adventure for the NES, released in 1990 by Konami and published by Ultra Games. It follows Solid Snake on a mission to stop a nuclear threat, sending him through guarded military installations and hostile outdoor environments. While it is connected to the earlier Metal Gear, this NES sequel tells its own story and takes a more accessible, action-focused approach.
Most of the game is viewed from above, with Snake moving through corridors, bases, and open areas while trying to avoid enemy patrols. Careful positioning matters: guards can spot Snake, trigger alarms, and turn a quiet infiltration into a firefight. Players can also attack directly, collect weapons and ammunition, use grenades, recover health with rations, and gather keycards needed to open restricted areas. The game regularly changes pace with side-scrolling sections, giving Snake a different perspective during parts of the mission and helping Snake’s Revenge stand apart from many other NES action games.
Exploration is tied closely to finding the right equipment and learning enemy patterns. Some areas reward patience, while others demand quick reactions, especially when alarms are raised or tougher opponents appear. Boss encounters and occasional vehicle-based sequences add further variety without losing the central military-spy atmosphere.
Snake’s Revenge can feel less methodical than later stealth games, but its combination of infiltration, shooting, item management, and changing viewpoints gives it a distinctive character on the NES. It is an interesting snapshot of how the Metal Gear formula was adapted for Nintendo’s 8-bit hardware, with a brisker style and plenty of period-specific quirks. RetroCloud offers a convenient way to play online on your browser and revisit this unusual chapter in the series.
