About Super Pitfall

Super Pitfall brings Pitfall Harry to the NES in a sprawling platform adventure released by Activision in 1987. Developed by Micronics and Khaos, it expands on the earlier Pitfall games with a maze-like world of jungle paths, underground chambers, hidden rooms, and winding routes that are easy to confuse. The objective is to explore this dangerous wilderness, recover valuable treasures, and find Harry’s missing companions, while avoiding the hazards scattered throughout the map.

Harry can run, jump, climb ladders, and use his trusty revolver to deal with certain enemies. The game’s challenges are less about rapid-fire action than careful exploration. Treasure and important routes may be concealed behind seemingly ordinary sections of scenery, and some platforms, ladders, and passages require close attention to discover. Snakes, bats, scorpions, alligators, and other hazards make careless movement costly, while limited lives add pressure to every expedition.

Super Pitfall has a distinctly old-school design. Its large interconnected maze can feel disorienting, especially when you first begin learning which areas connect and where hidden objects are located. The controls and collision can also be unforgiving, so progress often comes from memorizing the landscape as much as mastering Harry’s jumps. That roughness is part of the game’s identity, giving each successful trip through a familiar section a satisfying sense of improvement.

The NES version supports two players through alternating turns, making it a natural choice for comparing routes and sharing the hunt. Fans of early platformers, exploration-heavy adventures, and challenging 8-bit curiosities may find plenty to appreciate here. If you want to revisit one of Activision’s less polished but more unusual NES releases, you can play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
