About Athletic World
Athletic World brings a collection of simple, energetic sporting challenges to the NES, using the Family Fun Fitness Control Mat, also known as the Power Pad. Released in 1987 by Bandai and developed by Human Entertainment, it turns the floor in front of the television into the main controller. Instead of relying on traditional button presses, players step, run, and react on the mat to guide their on-screen athlete through a series of events.
The activities are presented with a bright outdoor theme and focus on physical timing rather than complex rules. Quick footwork is important, but so is learning the rhythm of each challenge. Some sections ask for rapid movement, while others reward careful coordination and well-timed actions. The game keeps the format accessible, making it easy to understand even for players unfamiliar with sports games, though performing consistently can take practice.
Athletic World is a single-player experience, designed as much for active play as for competition. Its appeal comes from the novelty of using body movement with an NES game and from the direct feedback provided by the mat. It is less about building a long-term career or following a story and more about improving your performance across its compact set of athletic tests.
Today, the game offers an interesting look at Nintendo-era attempts to make home gaming more physical. To experience it as intended, a compatible Power Pad setup is needed, but it remains a distinctive part of the NES library. RetroCloud provides a convenient way to play online on your browser and revisit this unusual Bandai release, whether you remember its foot-powered controls or are discovering them for the first time.
