About Double Dragon
Double Dragon is a side-scrolling beat ’em up that helped define the genre on the NES. Released in 1988, this version follows martial artists Billy and Jimmy Lee as they fight through a city controlled by the Black Warriors to rescue Marian. The story is simple, but it gives every street, alley, and industrial area a clear sense of purpose as you move from one confrontation to the next.
Combat is built around a small set of punches, kicks, jumps, and grappling attacks, yet the NES version gives the action more depth through its experience system. Defeating enemies earns points that unlock additional techniques, gradually expanding your fighting style as the game progresses. Weapons such as bats, whips, and knives can also be picked up and used against opponents, adding a welcome change of pace to the close-quarters combat.
The challenge can be unforgiving, especially when several enemies attack at once, but learning enemy patterns and choosing the right move makes each stage feel manageable. Familiar faces from the arcade game, including Abobo, Linda, and the gang leader Willy, provide memorable encounters along the way. A two-player option adds extra appeal, whether you are taking turns through the game or comparing progress with a friend.
Developed by Technos and published by Tradewest, Double Dragon is not a perfect arcade conversion, but its distinctive progression system and straightforward NES presentation give it an identity of its own. It remains a satisfying choice for fans of classic brawlers, particularly those who enjoy mastering a limited moveset and working through tough fights one screen at a time. On RetroCloud, you can play online on your browser and revisit one of the NES library’s most recognizable action games.
