About Ikari 3 The Rescue
Ikari 3: The Rescue brings SNK’s Ikari Warriors series to the NES with a tougher, more close-quarters take on top-down action. Released in 1991, it puts one or two players in control of heavily armed soldiers on a mission to rescue a kidnapped girl. The battlefield scrolls in multiple directions as you move through enemy-held territory, fighting soldiers and avoiding hazards along the way.
Unlike a straightforward run-and-gun game, Ikari 3 places considerable emphasis on hand-to-hand combat. Punches, kicks, and other attacks are essential when enemies crowd around you, while firearms and grenades provide welcome firepower when the action becomes more intense. Weapons and useful items can be collected during a stage, but ammunition and positioning still matter. Charging ahead carelessly usually leaves you surrounded, making the game’s short-range attacks just as important as its guns.
The NES version supports two-player cooperative play, which makes the often hectic battles more manageable—and more chaotic. Working together can help clear groups of enemies, although the limited space and relentless attacks still demand quick reactions. As with many arcade-inspired SNK games of the period, Ikari 3 is challenging from the outset and rewards players who learn enemy patterns, conserve resources, and keep moving.
Its graphics and controls are understandably scaled for Nintendo’s 8-bit hardware, but the game retains the series’ military-action atmosphere and direct, no-nonsense pacing. Ikari 3: The Rescue is a solid choice for players who enjoy demanding overhead combat, classic arcade design, and cooperative NES action. You can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and revisit this rough-edged SNK sequel without needing the original cartridge.
