Silk Worm

Silk Worm is a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up that brings the fast, demanding action of the arcade to the NES. Released in 1990, this Tecmo game puts one or two players in control of heavily armed vehicles battling across a constantly moving battlefield. In single-player mode, you can take to the air in a helicopter or command the ground-based jeep; with two players, both machines work together, covering different parts of the screen and dealing with threats from above and below.

The action is straightforward but rarely relaxed. Enemy helicopters, aircraft, tanks, armored vehicles, and other mechanical targets arrive in dense formations, while the terrain scrolls steadily forward. The helicopter has greater freedom of movement, making it useful for attacking enemies at different heights, while the jeep stays close to the ground and handles its own set of hazards. Success depends on positioning, quick reactions, and learning when to concentrate fire rather than simply holding down the attack button.

Silk Worm also includes weapon power-ups that improve your firepower, giving you a reason to take risks while moving through each stage. Losing a life can leave you vulnerable with weaker shots, so keeping your current weapon and coordinating with a partner are both important. The visual presentation is rugged and industrial, with forests, waterways, mountains, and military machinery providing a fitting backdrop for the relentless combat.

It is not an easy game, but its clear controls and cooperative format make the challenge appealing. Whether you are revisiting a Tecmo arcade-style shooter or discovering the NES version for the first time, Silk Worm offers compact, focused action that rewards practice. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and experience this energetic two-player shooter without needing the original console.
