About Simpsons Bart Vs The Space Mutants, The

The Simpsons: Bart Vs. the Space Mutants is a puzzle-oriented platform game for the NES, released in 1991 by Acclaim and developed by Imagineering. Based on the early Simpsons cartoon, it puts Bart Simpson in the middle of an alien invasion disguised as an ordinary day in Springfield. The space mutants are gathering seemingly harmless objects for a mysterious weapon, and Bart has to interfere with their plans before it is too late.

Rather than simply racing from left to right, each stage gives Bart a particular task to complete. The opening area, for example, revolves around finding and removing purple objects scattered throughout Springfield. Later stages introduce different objectives and obstacles, requiring careful exploration, observation, and a willingness to revisit parts of the screen. Bart’s special x-ray vision helps him identify disguised mutants and other suspicious targets, although its limited use means it cannot be relied on constantly.

The game combines traditional platforming with small-scale puzzles and arcade-style challenges. Bart can jump on enemies, interact with familiar Simpsons characters, and use items such as the slingshot in situations where timing matters. The controls and objectives can feel demanding, especially when the game expects players to work out what each stage is asking them to do rather than spelling out every solution. That unusual structure gives it a distinct character compared with more straightforward licensed platformers.

With its Springfield setting, recognizable cast, cartoon presentation, and varied stage goals, Bart Vs. the Space Mutants has plenty of appeal for Simpsons fans and retro players who enjoy games that reward experimentation. It is a one-player NES adventure from an era when licensed games often took creative liberties, and it remains an interesting snapshot of the series’ early video-game history. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and revisit Bart’s alien-hunting mission without needing the original console.
