Ski Or Die

Ski Or Die brings a lively collection of winter sports to the NES, combining fast downhill racing with goofy, competitive events. Released in 1991 by Electronic Arts and published by Ultra Games, it is less a traditional ski simulator than a compact winter sports party game, built around quick contests that are easy to pick up and enjoyable to replay.

The main attraction is its selection of events. Downhill Blitz sends your skier speeding down a hazardous course, where steering, timing, and avoiding obstacles are essential. Snowboard races offer a different kind of downhill challenge, while Acro Aerials focuses on launching from ramps and performing tricks for points. In Snowball Blast, players take aim and pelt one another with snow, and Innertube Thrash turns a slippery ride down the slopes into another test of control. Each event has its own pace and demands, giving the game more variety than its title might suggest.

Ski Or Die is especially well suited to group play. Up to six players can take part, making it a strong choice for a gathering, although the action is generally handled through turns rather than everyone racing simultaneously. The colorful presentation, exaggerated animations, and playful sense of competition give it an approachable arcade feel, while the different events provide enough room to improve your timing and high scores.

Whether you want a quick downhill run or a longer competition across several winter challenges, Ski Or Die offers a cheerful snapshot of early-1990s sports gaming. NES owners looking for a simple multiplayer diversion can play online on your browser through RetroCloud, revisiting one of the system’s more unusual cold-weather releases without needing to master a complicated control scheme.
