About Toki
Toki is a side-scrolling platform game that brings TAD’s colorful arcade action to the NES in 1991. You play as Toki, a human warrior transformed into a large, reluctant-looking ape by the evil wizard Vookimedlo. With his beloved Miho captured, Toki sets out through a series of hazardous environments to rescue her and restore his true form.
The game’s central twist is also its main weapon: Toki attacks by spitting projectiles from his mouth. Careful positioning is essential, since enemies approach from every direction and the shots have limited reach compared with a conventional run-and-gun weapon. Power-ups can improve Toki’s firepower, while other useful items help him survive the challenging stages. Along the way, he deals with ground-based creatures, airborne threats, water sections, traps, and large bosses that demand patience rather than frantic button pressing.
Toki’s movement has a deliberate, slightly weighty feel, making jumps and enemy encounters more about timing than speed. The NES version retains the bright, cartoon-like presentation associated with the arcade original, although its compact stages and tough difficulty give it a distinct home-console character. Some sections can feel unforgiving, but learning enemy patterns and finding safe opportunities to attack makes steady progress rewarding.
Designed for one or two players, the game supports alternating turns, giving friends a chance to take over after a mistake or compare how far they can get. It is a solid choice for players who enjoy classic platformers with unusual protagonists, straightforward controls, and a stronger emphasis on memorization than exploration. Whether you remember it from the NES era or are discovering it through RetroCloud, you can play online on your browser and experience one of Taito’s more distinctive action games.
