About Tiger Heli
Tiger Heli is a classic vertically scrolling shoot-’em-up that brings Toaplan’s arcade design to the NES in this 1987 release from Acclaim. You pilot the titular attack helicopter through a series of enemy-held landscapes, moving constantly upward while clearing the screen of fighter planes, tanks, turrets, ships, and other hostile units.
The controls are straightforward, but survival depends on more than simply holding down the fire button. Tiger Heli’s main weapon can be strengthened with power-ups, while bombs provide a valuable way to wipe out threats and escape crowded situations. Two smaller support helicopters fly alongside your craft, adding extra firepower and giving you a little more resilience in battle. Losing them makes later sections noticeably tougher, so collecting upgrades and choosing when to use your bombs are important parts of a successful run.
Enemy formations arrive from every direction, and the narrow NES playfield leaves limited room for mistakes. Some hazards are easy to anticipate, while others appear alongside ground defenses or dense clusters of aircraft, creating the tense rhythm that makes arcade shooters so replayable. A two-player mode lets players take turns tackling the action, making it a good fit for short competitive sessions as well as solo attempts at a higher score.
Although the NES version is more compact than its arcade counterpart, it preserves the direct, score-chasing appeal of the original. The simple objective—keep moving, shoot everything in sight, and learn the safest route—makes Tiger Heli easy to pick up while still demanding practice. It is a solid choice for fans of early console shmups and anyone looking to play online on your browser through RetroCloud.
