About Jackal

Jackal is a fast-paced top-down run-and-gun game that puts you behind the wheel of an armed military jeep. Released for the NES in 1988, Konami’s adaptation combines scrolling action, vehicle combat, and rescue objectives in a compact campaign designed for quick reflexes and constant movement.

You guide the Jackal unit through enemy-held territory, navigating roads, bridges, rivers, and fortified bases while firing at soldiers, tanks, trucks, and other hazards. The jeep’s machine gun handles targets directly ahead, while grenades provide a powerful attack against enemies and structures at a distance. Rescuing prisoners of war is central to the mission, and bringing them safely to extraction points adds urgency to each stage rather than simply rewarding a high score.

Power-ups can improve the jeep’s weapons, giving the machine gun greater range and making grenades more effective. These upgrades are useful, but losing a life can leave you with weaker firepower, so positioning and careful movement matter as much as aggressive shooting. Enemy fire is often relentless, and narrow routes or crowded bases can quickly turn a confident advance into a scramble for survival.

Jackal is especially enjoyable with two players, letting friends drive side by side and cover more of the screen together. Cooperation helps with crowded areas, although the action remains chaotic enough to produce plenty of close calls. The simple controls are easy to pick up, while the brisk stages and demanding enemy patterns give experienced players a reason to return.

With its distinctive jeep-based gameplay, direct arcade feel, and energetic presentation, Jackal remains one of the NES’s memorable action shooters. RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser and revisit Konami’s tense rescue missions without losing the straightforward challenge that made the original so appealing.
